  • Peels in the Summer? How & Why.

Many MedSpas and Spas do a lot of chemical peels during the summer. A chemical peel in the summer sloughs away surface cells that have become dark and dull due to sun exposure, to uncover new glowing skin underneath. While staying inside out of the sun is always the best option for your clients following a Derma MD Corrector Peel, this is rarely a practical option. Therefore, it’s a good idea for them to purchase Derma MD Ultra Shield Creamy SPF 30 so they have it available to apply before they head outside after their peel procedure. Derma MD's SPF 30 is the perfect sun protection because it is gentle enough for daily use, won't clog pores and provides both UVA and UVB protection.

Corrector Peels contain Alpha Hydroxy acids (AHAs) and other ingredients that increase skin's sensitivity to the sun leaving unprotected skin vulnerable to sunburn. Also, remember that skin is still vulnerable to the harmful effects of the sun even when it is overcast outside. Anyone just having a peel should apply sunscreen an hour before going outdoors and then reapply every two hours or so if spending time outside. Apply the sunscreen evenly and thoroughly over all areas that had the peel applied, which may include your face, neck, shoulders, and chest. This is a MUST for at least two weeks following the peel procedure.

Remind your clients that they are doing chemical peels to improve the health, feel and appearance of their skin so it makes sense to take precautionary measures after their peel to protect their sensitive skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays. If they neglect to apply sunscreen after a peel and spend time outside in the sun, they may end up with a serious sunburn that can leave unsightly white blotches called hypo-pigmentation, hyper-pigmentation which results in dark permanent spots, or even scars.

Always use sunscreen on your client as their last step before they leave your clinic if it is light out. Exfoliated skin is very susceptible to hyper-pigmentation so make sure to educate your customer as to the importance of sunscreen.... the only other option is to stay out of the sun entirely.
