As a professional you will be asked many times about a teenager with acne. It may be a child or a grandchild. This is a very sensitive issue and as a professional you can be a BIG help to those parents & grandparents. Having any type of acne can feel devastating for a teenager.
To help the parents and the teenager you can supply them with a treatment plan which includes products that are not harmful but still effective, professional treatments & advice on how to deal with this issue.
Acne must be taken seriously and letting the parents/grandparents know that this will NOT clear up on its own. While waiting for acne to clear on its own, the teen’s self-esteem could plummet. The sooner a treatment plan is put in place the better as treatments can prevent acne from getting worse as well as causing permanent scarring.
The problem with most teen acne is getting them to use products on a regular basis. Reminding the teen constantly may be considered nagging and the teen will stop using the proper products. Fewer reminders from parents may be more effective.
This is where you as a professional can HELP. Recommend the teen come in for regular treatments (3-4 times per month). This will not only treat the acne but while doing the treatment YOU can remind the teen to use their products on a regular basis. This will take the stress off of the parents and thus the teen. Studies have shown that teenagers are more likely to follow a treatment plan right before/after an appointment.
Put together a treatment plan with both the parent and the teen. Have a treatment package available that would be affordable. I would suggest that the treatments be short (lunch time). Book the appointments 1- 3 months in advance so the teen knows what the schedule will be.
Most parents & teens don’t know how treatable acne can be OR that you even do acne treatments for teens. Have before and after pictures in your waiting room and even a sample of a 3 month treatment plan to go with the pictures. This will get your clients asking you questions.
If you need help putting a treatment plan together please let me know as I would be happy to help!!
